Nowadays, the need to protect the environment is becoming more and more pressing, especially after the environmental catastrophe that occurred last month here in Galicia: a merchant boat lost part of the cargo containers it was carrying and among them, some loads of plastic pellets, specifically 25 tonnes. You can imagine the consequences: entire beaches covered with these materials only a few millimetres large, which greatly complicates sand cleaning operations and poses a risk to marine organisms as they ingest these elements mistaking them for food. The younger participants in the workshops confirmed their direct and active action on the issue, mobilising to collect as much pellets
as possible from the beaches of Coruña, as the problem affected the entire Galician coast. Thanks also to the help of social media, many people were sensitised to take action and help as much as possible the various groups of volunteers who decided to involve themselves directly and decisively in the matter.
In fact, someone even invented an easily constructed two-tier system of nets and filters that allowed the pellets to be separated from the sand, so as not to further alter the place’s own ecosystem. Gathering events were organised mainly every weekend, as the largest number of people could participate on these days. Participants who experienced this personally confirm to us that a large proportion of the people were young, much more concerned as they are the generation that will have to live with all the environmental and climate changes that are happening, 90% of the time due to human actions
